The Cognitive approach to explaining depression Flashcards
What did Beck propose?
That people have a cognitive vulnerability towards developing depression through faulty information processing, negative self - schemas and the cognitive triad of automatic negative thoughts
What happens through faulty information processing?
The patient blows small issues out of proportion and dwells on the negatives and thinks in black and white terms
What are negative schemas
The patient interprets all information about themselves from the world in a negative light, lowering confidence
What are cognitive triads
Patient suffers from negative automatic thoughts about themselves the future and the world
Give a + of Beck (SEGT)
Supporting evidence of Grazioli and Terry’s evaluation of 65 pregnant for cognitive vulnerability and depression before and after birth. Researchers found a positive correlation between increased cognitive vulnerability and. chances of been depressed. Supporting the link between faulty cognition and depression, which is in line with Beck’s predictions and increasing validity
Give a + (IUCB)
Increased understanding of cognitive bias. of depression translates to effective treatments. Therefore translating into a successful therapy and the consequent. effectiveness of CBT is merit to the accuracy of Becks explanation
What was Ellis’ theory
THe ABC model
Explain the ABC model
A - Activating event leads to an irrational belief. (B) resulting in an emotional consequence. (C) in the form of depression, The key is the specific interpretation of the irrational belief, this is why some have depression and others don’t according to the ABC model
Give a - (ECEATD) of Ellis
Ellis’ model. can’t explain all. types of depression, apart from those with a clear activating event. Many suffer from depression without a cause and many feel frustrated that their concerns aren’t reflected in this theory sharing it is a limited model
Give a + (PA) of Ellis
It provides practical application of CBT. The effectiveness of CBT suggests that identifying and challenging irrational beliefs, which in turn supports the theoretical basis of the ABC, through a specific focus on the role of faulty cognitions in the development of depression and specifically in the interpretation of the activating event
Give a - (CEAD) Ellis
Both cant explain all aspects of depression like anger and hallucinations. This poses a difficult practical issue in that patients are frustrated that their symptoms can’t be explained according to this theory and therefore can’t be addressed in therapy
