The Cognitive Approach Flashcards
Define the internal mental process:
This focuses on our private operations of the mind
e.g. thoughts, perceptions, attention.
Define the information processing approach:
It is when information flows through the cognitive system in a sequence of stages.
Input, storage, retrieval.
What are computer models used for:
They compare the mind to a computer. There are similarities in the way information is processed. (Artificial intelligence)
What is a schema?
It is a package of information learned through experience that allows you to respond to the object appropriately.
E.g. the schema for a chair is something with legs that you can sit on
What happens to a schema as we get older?
A schema becomes more detailed and sophisticated. This enables us to process lots of information quickly. But because it is a mental shortcut sometimes they make errors.
Define cognitive neuroscience:
The scientific study of how mental processes affect behaviour. For example, the development of brain imaging techniques allows us to see which parts of the brain are activated when we use certain cognitive processes.
Define internal mental processes:
This focuses on behaviour that can’t be observed and measured. ( how a person reaching decisions through thoughts).
Where do research methods take place?
In a lab, which makes the results reliable and reproducible.
Define the cognitive approach:
It is focused on how our mental processes affect behaviour.
