The Biological Approach Flashcards
Define the biological approach:
It explains behaviour in terms of psychological processes in the brain and body and argues that there are physical causes of depression, memory etc.
Behaviour genetics:
Intelligence/personality/mental disorders are inherited through genes and in the same way as physical characteristics.
What are twin studies used for?
To see how strong genetic bases is for disorders.
MZ twins share 100% of each of their genes.
DZ twins share 50% of their genes.
Define genotype:
It is the genetic make up which is influenced by environmental factors. E.g. exercise and dyed hair
Define phenotype:
The way in which genes are expressed through physical, behavioural and psychological characteristics.
Evolution and behaviour:
Natural selection, meaning any behaviour genetically determined and help you survive will continue to future generations.
Define neurochemistry:
When chemicals in our brain influence of mood and behaviour.
E.g. high levels of serotonin= very happy
Low levels of serotonin= depression
Define neuroanatomy:
Structure and functions in our brain may influence our behaviour.
What is the opposite of this approach?
The cognitive approach.
