Headed union army in 1862 hen they invaded western Tennessee. Brave, tough, and decisive military commander.
Robert E. Lee
Took command of the Confederate army after Joseph E. Johnston was wounded while fighting.
Battle of Bull Run
Inexperienced Union soldiers came upon equally inexperienced Confederate army encamped near the little creek of Bull Run. First victory for the confederate army.
Battle of Antietam
After McClellan found Lee’s army orders, he ordered his men forward after Lee. They fought on Sept. 17 by a sluggish creek called Antietam. Bloodiest single-day battle in American history. McClellan didnt keep going though, so Lincoln fired him.
Battle of Gettysburg
Three day battle that was the turning point of the war. Crippled the South so badly that Lee would never again posess sufficient forces to incade a Northern state.
Emancipation Proclamation
Freed slaes that were behind Confederate lines. Didn’t apply to any Union states or areas they had captured during the war.
Conscription
A draft that would force certain members of the population to serve in the army.
Gettysburg Address
Lincoln”s speech that remade America. People now said the United States is instead of the United States are.
Appomattox Courthouse
Site of the Confederate surrender on April 9, 1865.
Thirteenth Amendment
Stopped slavery in the United States.
John Wilkes Booth
Assassinated Lincoln.
Military strategies of the North and South at the outset of the war.
Union had a three part plan (Anaconda Plan): blockade the southern ports, split the confederacy in two, then capture the capital of Rochmond Virginia. South was more defensive since they were protecting their homeland.
Advantages for the North and the South at the beginning of the war.
North had more fighting power, more factories, greater food production, and a more extensive railroad system. South had “King Cotton”, first-rate generals, a stong military tradition, and soldiers who were highly motivated.
