A

After McClellan found Lee’s army orders, he ordered his men forward after Lee. They fought on Sept. 17 by a sluggish creek called Antietam. Bloodiest single-day battle in American history. McClellan didnt keep going though, so Lincoln fired him.

A

North had more fighting power, more factories, greater food production, and a more extensive railroad system. South had “King Cotton”, first-rate generals, a stong military tradition, and soldiers who were highly motivated.

What was Grant and Sherman’s rationale for using the strategy of total war?

A

Sherman had to avoid being circled by the Confederate army, so he abandoned his supply lines and made a wide path of destruction to get out. They wanted to make the South so sick of war that they wouldnt think about doing it again for a long time.
