Radical Republicans
Republicans that were angered by Lincoln’s moderate reconstruciton plan.
Freedmen’s Bureau
Assissted former slaves and poor whites in teh South by distributing clothing and food. Set up 40 hospitals, 4,000 schools, 61 industrail institutes, and 74 teacher-training centers.
Fourteenth Amendment
Provided a constitutional basis for the civil rights act stating that alll persons born of naturalized in the US were citizens of the country.
Fifteenth Amendment
No one can be kept from voting becuase of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.
Carpetbagger
Name for notherners that moved to the south given to them by the democrats because they were said to arrive with so few belongings that they could all fit in a small carpetbag.
Sharecropping
Landowners divided their land and gave each worker a few acres, along with seed and tools, and each worker gave a share of their harvest to the landowner.
Ku Klux Klan
Goal was to restore white supremacy. Killed thousands of men, women, and children, along with burning down many buildings and property.
How did Andrew Johnson’s plan to reconstruct the south differ form that of Lincoln’s?
His intent was to deal harshly with Confederate leaders.
Why did the Radicals want to impeach Johnson?
They felt he was not carrying out his obligation to enforce the Reconstruction Act.
In what ways did the emancipated slaves excercise their freedom?
Went wherever they wanted, found their families, sought education,politics, churches.
How did white landownders in the South reassert their ecomomic power in the decade following the Civl War?
They participated in Sharecropping.
How did Southern whites regain political power during Reconstruction?
By gaining home rule so they could run state governments withhout federal intervention.
