The Circulatory System & Heart Flashcards
What’s the function of plasma?
Transports heat and chemicals.
Plasma cells are one method the body uses to fight diseases.
What are the 4 components of blood?
Plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells & platelets.
What’s the function of red blood cells?
Contains a red pigment called haemoglobin.
They transport oxygen from the lungs to all the living tissues of the body and carry away carbon dioxide.
What’s the function of white blood cells?
Fights infection.
What’s the function of platelets?
Clot blood and prevent extreme bleeding.
What do arteries do?
Carries blood under high pressure.
Carry oxygenated blood away from the heart. (thick walls)
What do veins do?
Carry oxygenated blood back to the heart. (Thin walls)
Low pressure.
Have valves to prevent back flow.
What do capillaries do?
Link arteries and veins.
Very thin walls to allow oxygen and carbon dioxide to enter and exit the blood and our cells.
What does the vena cava do?
Carries blood back to the heart.
What does the right atrium and left atrium do?
Hold deoxygenated blood.
What does the septum do?
Separates the LHS from the RHS.
What does the cardiac muscle do?
Never tires.
Thicker on the LHS because blood must be pumped further.
RHS only pumps blood to the lungs.
What does the pulmonary artery do?
Carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs.
What does the pulmonary vein do?
Carries oxygenated blood back to the heart, into the left atrium.
What does the heart do?
The heart beats again and again and the blood is sent through the Aorta , all around the body.
