The Circulatory System Flashcards
What are the 4 main functions of the circulatory system?
Distribution of molecules (mainly gases) for nutrition, growth and repair
Chemical signalling
Thermoregulation
Mediate inflammation and host defence responses
What 2 sub-systems make up the circulatory system?
Cardiovascular and lymphatic
What are the 3 main components of the circulatory system?
Arterial system (arteries carry blood away from the heart), the heart and the venous system (carry blood towards the heart)
What are the 2 circulations involved in the CV system?
Pulmonary and systemic
What is the blood flow in the pulmonary system?
From right side of the heart to the lungs to the left side
What is the blood flow in the systemic system?
From left side of the heart, to capillary beds of organs and tissues (systems) back to the right side
How does the muscular double pump action of the heat work?
Systole (contraction) and then diastole (relaxation) Remember di(astole) contraction dies
What is the average pulse rate?
70 bpm
