THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM: Flashcards
1
Q
Blood:
A
is the fluid transported by the circulatory system, through the pumping action of the heart via the blood vessels, to every cell of the body
2
Q
Red blood cells:
A
transport of nutrients and oxygen to cells, and carbon dioxide and waste products from cells
3
Q
White blood cells:
A
move to sites of infection to destroy bacteria and disease causing organisms
4
Q
Plasma:
A
watery part of the blood in which other cells and substances are suspended
5
Q
Platelets:
A
responsible for blood clotting
6
Q
Functions of blood:
A
- Transport of nutrients, carbon dioxide and water: through the red blood cells
- Regulation of the body’s fluid content: through the passing of fluid from blood to body tissues (plasma)
- Regulation of the body’s temperature: redistributing blood to the internal organs or extremities
- Protection of the body: fighting bacteria (white blood cells) and clotting blood (platelets)
7
Q
Arteries:
A
- Carries blood away from the heart
- Blood flow is created by beating of the heart (pulse)
- Carries oxygenated blood barring the pulmonary artery
8
Q
Veins:
A
- Carry blood to the heart
- Blood flow is created by the contraction of muscles
- Valves are positioned at regular intervals
- Carries deoxygenated blood back to the heart barring the pulmonary vein
9
Q
Capillaries:
A
- Reach every cell of the body
- Have thin walls composed of a single layer of cells which allows for nutrients, like oxygen and carbon dioxide to pass in and out
