385 - 461; Romano-British Christian missionary; bishop in Ireland; as teenager was captured by Irish pirates and a slave in Ireland, lived for 6 years then escaped back to his family; after becoming a cleric returned to Ireland to serve as bishop

Germanic people who played a major role in the fall of the Western Roman Empire and the emergence of medieval Europe.
Huns
A nomadic people who lived in Central Asia, Caucasus, and Eastern Europe. 430 - established vast but short lived dominion in Europe, conquered the Goths/other germanic peoples outside of Roman territory. 451 - invaded Western Roman province of Gaul. 452 - invaded Italy. Attila dies in 453 and the Huns ceased to be a major threat to Rome.

Germanic people who ruled most of the Italian Peninsula from 568 - 774.

Clovis I: 466 -511; King of the Franks; converted to Catholicism in 496 at the urging of his wife; this lead to widespread conversion among the Frankish Peoples
Augustine to England
596; Pope Gregory the Great sent a party of Benedictine Monks to barbaric England under the leadership of St. Augustine of Canterbury.
Battle of Tours
Was fought on 10 October 732, and was an important battle during the Umayyad invasion of Gaul. It resulted in the victory for the Frankish and Aquitanian forces, led by Charles Martel, over the invading forces of the Umayyad Caliphate, led by Abdul Rahman Al-Ghafiqi, governor of al-Andalus.
Iconoclast Controversy
Iconoclasts - rejection of icons expect for the Cross, The Bible, and the Communion Elements. John of Damascus: accept the icons as reminders to help the faithful give proper respect. Seventh General Council in Nicaea in 787 condemned the iconoclastic movement.
Boniface
The most famous British missionary in the middle ages was Boniface. Commissioned by Pope Gregory II in 729 to evangelise Germany.
Charlemagne
747-814; aka Charles the Great; was king of the Franks 768, King of the Lombards 774, first Emperor of the Romans from 800. United the majority of western and central Europe. First recognized emperor to rule from western Europe after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. The “Father of Europe.”
