Russian Revolution
- Political and social revolution. Russia abolished its monarchy and adopt a socialist form of government.
Fundamentalism
Late 19th - early 20th centuries. Biblical literalism. Reaction to theological liberalism and cultural modernism.
Scopes Trial
Scopes Monkey Trial. High school teacher accused of teaching human evolution in a state funded school. The trial publicized the fundamentalist–modernist controversy, which set Modernists, who said evolution was not inconsistent with religion, against fundamentalists, who said the word of God as revealed in the Bible took priority over all human knowledge. The case was thus seen both as a theological contest and as a trial on whether evolution should be taught in schools.
Adolf Hitler
1889 - 1945. Austrian born German politician. Dictator of Germany from 1933-death in 1945. Rose to power as the leader of the Nazi party. Initiated WWII by invading Poland.
World Council of Churches
Officially established 23 August 1948. Made of up varying denominations of churches. They meet every 7-8 years and elect a central committee that governs between assemblies.
Billy Graham
1918 - 2018. American evangelist and ordained Southern Baptist minister. He held large indoor and outdoor rallies with sermons that were broadcast on radio and television. Was known for his revivals and crusades. As a result, he preached the gospel to more people in person than anyone in the history of Christianity.
Berlin Wall
Barrier that divided Berlin from 1961-1989. Constructed by East Germany. It was the “anti-fascist protection rampart” against West Berlin. In 1989 a peaceful development when the Iron Curtain broke and the Berlin Wall Fell. The fall of the Berlin Wall paved the way for German reunification in October 1990.
2nd Vatican Council
1959 - 1962. Council was called because the pope felt the church needed updating. Church practices needed to be improved. An extensive reform of the liturgy, a renewed theology of the Church, of revelation and of the laity, a new approach to relations between the church and world, to ecumenism, to non-Christian religions, and to religious freedom.
Lausanne Congress
- Conference of 2700 evangelical Christian leaders in Switzerland. To discuss the progress, resources, and methods of evangelizing the world. Committee was lead by Billy Graham.
