The Christian Church Flashcards
Why did people have to rely upon Galens work?
The Church did not allow human dissections, but Galen proved his theories with animal dissection
Why did the church not allow human dissections?
Because it had been created by God
What did monasteries do to help and why?
Monasteries provided rudimentary (basic) care as the Bible stressed the importance of caring for the sick
What were medieval/ monastery hospitals like?
- they provided shelter and warmth for vulnerable (homeless, poor and elderly)
- very few would care for the ill
- treated by nuns and monks who had no formal training or qualifications
- treatment involved prayer and rest
- mass took place several times a day
- altars at end of wards
What did the church’s support of Galens work do to the progress in medicine at the time?
Prevented real progress - those who questioned could face imprisonment or execution, doctors couldn’t do their own research
List the public heath measures that all monasteries had
- fresh water supply
- well designed in order to keep waste away from inhabitants
What was The Crusades?
Many people were encouraged to leave Britain and spread Christianity in the East
How did the Christian Church have a positive impact on medicine?
Through The Crusades: though it was a violent, war-filled time…
- as Crusaders travelled East they encountered Muslim doctors who shared their skills and knowledge (they were far more advanced)
