Key principles:
- The welfare of the child is paramount
- parents wishes can be overridden if they are not in the best interest of the children
- paramount principle
Children in need means:
Unlikely to achieve or maintain a reasonable standard of health and development without help from local authority services.
Help & assistance should:
- Have partnership with the parents
- meet identified needs
- be appropriate to the child’s religion, culture, language etc
- allow complaints procedures
- effective partnerships with other agencies
What is included in HEALTH and DEVELOPMENT
Health - physical or mental
Development - physical, intellectual, emotional, social & behavioural =(PIES)
What is a director of children’s services
Someone who is accountable for children’s services
What are the departments rated
So that their performance is held accountable and can be clearly seen as stated in the act.
What is the need for ice information database
It makes it easier for professional care workers to share information about the children in their care
What is the use of local safeguarding children’s boards?
Been put into place in order to coordinate child protection procedures more effectively (this focuses on the children’s cases as it isn’t just social services in general)
What are local authorities required to do?
Produce plans for children that consider their special needs to make the children aware of future planning.
What does a children’s commissioner do?
- Initiate enquires on the children’s behalf
- find out the needs of the child & see their views
- investigate the needs and interests of young people
