What are the three levels of the Chianti Classico Pyramid?
Level 1 - Annata - youthful and fresh;
Level 2 - Riserva - Elevated Elegance;
Level 3 - Gran Selezione - The Pinnacle
What is the ageing requirement for Annata wines?
A minimum of 12 months before release. No type of ageing vessel is specified.
What is the Disciplinare rules for Annata?
Minimum 12%ABV
Must express as fruit, fine, pleasant, well-balanced and easy to drink. Balanced freshness and maturation.
Independently assessed and tasted to ensure it meets the Disciplinare standards.
Only then is Black Rooster awarded.
What are the ageing requirements for Chianti Classico Riserva?
A minimum 2 years including a minimum 3 months in bottle. Most age longer in bottle.
What is the Disciplinare rules for Riserva?
Minimum 12.5%ABV;
Show a fruity with fine integration that accompany and support the wine structure, consistency and persistence.
How might a producer make a Riserva?
Special parcel of vines from across estate or a single vineyard wine.
When was the Gran Selezione category established?
- It represents “the best of the best”.
What are Disciplinare requirements for Gran Selezione?
Minimum 30 months including three months in bottle;
Minimum 13% ABV;
100% Estate grown;
Must be fruity, spicy, enveloping where elegance, finesse and balance of the tannins and acidity maintain the characteristic of fusion and of wholeness.
What are the wines that follow the protocols for Gran Selezione permitted to do since 2021?
They can use the name of the UGA but it is not mandatory.
What does a Chianti Classico label show?
The name Chianti Classico;
The Black Rooster on the neck or the back label;
“Riserva” or “Gran Selezione” if it is this level;
UGA if producer wishes on GS level;
The DOCG marking for traceability.
