The Charge of the Light Brigade Flashcards
‘Valley of Death’
Metaphor suggests danger of the conflict. Death is almost inevitable which makes the soldiers all the braver. Repeated to emphasise this.
‘Flash’d as they turn’d in air’
Description of the soldiers fighting. ‘Flash’d’ suggests speed and ‘turn’d in air’ connotes skill as they almost seem to be flying.
‘Honour the charge they made’
Imperative ‘honour’ communicates poet’s determination that the soldiers be remembered – he is ordering
the reader.
Structure
Regular, strong rhythm creates an urgent pace, reflecting the battle itself. Also mimics the sound of hoofbeats.
Idea/Perspective/Context (AO3)
Poem is propaganda. The charge of the Light Brigade was a huge disaster - the poem tries to reframe it in a positive way.
