‘Ranks on ranks of shivering grey’
Metaphor used to describe storm clouds as an army. The real enemy is nature here as seen through the weather. Pathetic fallacy could mirror bleak mood.
‘Love of God seems dying’
The soldiers are losing their faith due to what they are experiencing. Repetition of word ‘dying’ suggests that this occupies their thoughts.
Structure
Regular line length and stanzas – repetitive. Mirrors the tedious predictability of a lot of trench warfare. Links with line ‘but nothing happens’.

Owen responds to the propaganda of WW1 which made war appear exciting. Owen fought in WW1 and writes from personal experience – realistic.
