Exposure uses personification to intimidate us with phrases like “merciless iced east winds” and “the winds nonchalance”- this gives impression that weather is angry

Uses personification to stir up emotions and keep reader on edge for the heroes he writes about by saying they are going into the “jaws of death” and “mouth of hell”
Light brigade introduction
Fast moving poem made up of 6 stanzas with rhyming in each. Poem describes the advancing of soldiers in the Crimean war. Tennyson was a laureate (countries official poet )
Exposure introduction
Poem written about first hand experience in ww1 in winter by Wilfred Owen . More depressing looks on the non-heroic side of war. Focuses on conflict between man and weather, nature always wins . Poem has 8 stanzas with a constant uses of half line to end
Exposure “but nothing happens”
This short simple half line is repeated to emphasise their boredom and creates tension
Exposure “for love of god seems dying”
Could mean their love of god is fading and disappearing or that god disagrees with what they are doing and that he doesn’t support or love them anymore
Sibilance
Light brigade- “storm’d at with shot and shell” could show swiftness of war
Exposure- “ sudden successive flights of bullets streak the silence” mimics the sound of the bullets
Light brigade “All in the valley of Death”
illuding to bible verse about entering hell , connotations of evil , sets the scene visual imagery. Capital d shows importance of death throughout poem

Verbs are used to indicate the energy, drama and excitement of the charge

Salient is a twisting and winding tunnel - he feels trapped with his memories and cannot get away like he is Ina maze , memories are his enemies
Exposure “shivering ranks of grey”
No colour the battlefield is cold and lifeless. Grey was the colour of German uniform so this aligns nature with enemy
Exposure “black with snow”
Snow is normally white (pure) but here it is black (evil,death)
