Alliteration
The occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of a group of words
Assonance
Similarity of vowel sounds in words that don’t completely rhyme
Cacophony
A harsh discordant mixture of sounds
Onomatopoeia
Formation of a word from a sound associated with what is named
Allegory
A story,poem or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning
Allusion
An expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly
Analogy
A comparison between one thing and another
Connotation
An idea/feeling which a word involved for a person in addition to its literal meaning
Hyperbole
Exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally
Irony
Expression of ones meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite
Juxtaposition
The fact of 2 things being seen or placed close together with contrasting effect
Paradox
A seemingly absurd/contradictory statement or proposition which when investigated may prove to be well founded or true
Verse
Writing arranged with a metrical rhythm, typically having a rhyme
Stanza
Group of lines forming the basic recurring metrical unit in a poem
Rhyme scheme
The ordered pattern of rhymes at the ends of lines of a poem or verse
