The Challenge Posed By The Rising Of The Northern Earls Flashcards
What happened in strand 1 of the conspiracy that led to the rebellion
-The Sussex and Leicester factions plot to have Mary QOS marry the Duke of Norfolk, hoping to pressure her into naming her successor
-They also hoped to eliminate Cecil’s political power and replace him with pro catholic sympathisers
-The plot failed when the rumours of the marriage plan reached the queen. Norfolk left court without permission and takes up residence at Kenninghall, racked by indecision.
-He eventually surrender to the Queen and is put in the TOL
What happened in strand 2 of the conspiracy that led to rebellion
-The second strand involved Earls of Westmorland and Northumberland, who along with Lord Dacre had been sidelined by the Elizabethan regime, which did not fully trust them, partly due to their pro Catholic faith. (Strong belief in Catholicism in the North)
-The failure if the Norfolk- marry marriage plan and the Duke’s imprisonment added to their frustration.
-They felt they had no choice but to lead a rebellion against an aggressive, uncaring Protestant regime.
When did the rebellion officially begin
