the challenge of resource management case studies Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the location and the problems concerning electricity with your case study for a local renewable energy scheme.
A
Bihar is a rural state in north-east India, an NEE. 85% of people who live there are not connected to the electricity grid, and those who are connected, the supply is unreliable.
2
Q
Describe the renewable energy scheme in your case study for a local renewable energy scheme.
A
bihar, india - NEE:
- in 2007, there was a scheme to use local biomass to supply homes in rural areas of Bihar
- it uses rice husks - a waste product from producing rice for food - they are collected and used to generate electricity in small, local power plants, each with filters to clean the gas and a distribution system
- supplies homes within 1.5km range
3
Q
Give four ways in which the local renewable energy scheme has positively impacted its location.
A
bihar, india - NEE:
- by 2015, 84 rice husk powered plants in Bihar, and it supplied over 200,000 people
- producing electricity locally is very efficient as the energy sources do not have to be transported long distances, and the energy doesn’t have to be transported long distances before reaching homes
- producing electricity by biomass reduces the need for small diesel generators and kerosene lamps, so reduced use of fossil fuels
- provides employment
