The Challenge of Natural Hazards - Tectonic Hazards Flashcards
What is a natural hazard?
A natural process which can cause death, injury or disruption to humans or destroy property or possessions
What’s the difference between a natural event and a natural disaster?
A natural event is when a natural process happens but it doesn’t impact people, it becomes a natural hazard if people are going to be inpacted
What are the 3 types of natural hazard?
(Hint: G, A,F)
- Geological hazards
- Atmospheric hazards (aka meteorological)
- Flooding hazard (aka hydrological)
What are the factors affecting natural hazards?
- Magnitude
- Time
- Level of development
- Management
- Frequency
- Population density + distribution
- Education
- Natural factors
What is continental crust?
The thinner part of the earth’s crust - 25-70km thick
What is oceanic crust?
The thinner part of the earth’s crust - 7-10km thick
What is the asthenosphere?
The weak upper layer of the earth’s mantle - can deform like plastic
What is a tectonic plate?
A segment of the earth’s crust that floats on the mantle
What is a plate boundary/margin?
The boundary or margin between some tectonic plates
How many tectonic plates are on earth?
7 large tectonic plates, 12 smaller tectonic plates
Why do tectonic plates move?
CONVECTION CURRENTS
- Magma rises because of heat from the core
- When it rises it becomes thicker and cools creating friction between the mantle and crust
- When the mantle magma moves, the crust also moves with it.
