Q

Where is the white and grey matter located in the brain?

A

Grey matter is on the surface. (Neural soma + unmeylinated axons)
Deep cerebrum is mostly white due to myelinated axons. (can also have patches of grey matter within the white matter- includes the basal nuclei and hippocampus)

Q

Basal nuclei of the grey matter within the deep cerebrum

A

Contains the corpus striatum, the claustrum, and the amygdala.

Q

Corpus striatum

A

Within the grey matter of the deep cerebrum.
Contains:
-caudate nucleus (anterior most)
-Lentiform nuclei is posterior most (putamen + globus palladus)
(Caudate and lentiform nucleus are separated by an internal capsule. major portion is the posterior limb of the internal capsule. Part of visual pathway and major motor output passes through here)

Q

Posterior limb of internal capsule

A

Separates the caudate nucleus and lentiform nuclei of the corpus striatum of the deep cerebral grey matter.

Major motor output and ON passes through here.

Q

Claustrum

A

Within the grey matter of the deep cerebrum.

Separated from the lentiform nucleus by the external capsule. The other side is the extreme capsule.

Very thin, surrounded by white matter. Unsure of function.

A

Within the anterior temporal lobe. Associated with the limbic system.

Q

Hippocampus

A

Part of the limbic system. Axons sent to fornix posteriorly.

Role is to transform short term memory to long term memory.

Extends from anterior potion of deep temporal lobe.

Q

Right and left brain dominance

A

Right and left cerebral hemispheres are identical at birth, but one hemisphere becomes more dominant.

90% of people are left hemisphere-dominant.

Handedness and lagnuage/speech perception are usually found on the dominant hemisphere.

Spacial perception, face recognition, and auditory understanding are usually on the non dominant hemisphere.
