Basal Nuclei Flashcards
The caudate nucleus wraps around which two structures
The lentiform (palladium and putamen) and the thalamus. It projects out of the screen (vertical) and loops over the two structures, then dives back into the brain. At cross section, you can see head of the caudate nucleus and then tail down below the thalamus.
Head and tail are in contact with the thalamus and the tail terminates at the amygdaloid body.
Difference between corpus striatum and striatum
Striatum- Caudate nucleus and putamen (these two are connected via grey matter)
Corpus striatum- Striatum + the palladium OR could word it as the lentiform + the caudate.
In other words, all portions of the basal nuclei except the amygdaloid body.
Associations to the basal ganglia
Substantia nigra and subthalmic nuclei
Afferent (sensory to the corpus striatum) messaging to the corpus striatum
Corticostriate- excitatory, glutamate
Thalamostriate- Excitatory, glutamate
Nigrostriate- Inhibitory, dopamine
Efferent (motor from corpus striatum to body) messaging from the corpus striatum
Striatonigral- inhibitory, GABA, Ach, Substance P?
Striatopallidal- inhibitory, GABA
Pallidofugal- Inhibitory, GABA
