The Cerebral Cortex Flashcards
What is the cerebral cortex?
A thin outer layer of the cerebrum, it processes complex sensory information, language, voluntary movement and regulation of emotions.
What is the Corpus Callosum?
Joins the two hemispheres of the brain together.
What is Contralateral functions?
One side of the brain controls the opposite side of the body.
Left hemisphere - controls right side of the body.
Right hemisphere - controls left side of the body.
What is the left hemisphere responsible for?
Verbal (speaking, writing, language) and analytical.
What is the right hemisphere responsible for?
Non verbal, visual and spatial awareness.
What are the different parts of the frontal lobe?
- Primary motor cortex.
- Broca’s area.
- Prefrontal cortex.
Primary Motor Cortex function
Voluntary Movement.
Broca’s area function
Speech Production.
Prefrontal Cortex function
High-order cognitive functions
eg. planning, decision making, symbolic thinking, reasoning, emotion, personality.
What is the partial lobe and the different parts?
The partial lobe receives and processes information.
It consists of the Somatosensory cortex.
Somatosensory cortex function.
Spatial awareness, touch, temperature and pain are processed here.
What is the temporal lobe and the different parts?
The temporal lobe is responsible for auditory reception (hearing), as well as memory, facial recognition and emotion responses. Conists of: - Primary auditory cortex. - Wernicke's area. - Amygdala. - Hippocampus
Primary auditory cortex function
recieves sensory auditory information and processes it to give sound meaning.
Wernicke’s area function
speech comprehension
Amygdala function
Mediation of fear;
damage to this area results in individual not being able to respond to fear.
