The central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord Flashcards
What are the roles of the spinal cord?
-Funnels sensory information from the body to the brain.
-Carries motor commands from the brain to the body.
-Contains local circuits for reflexes and simple behaviors.
-Functions as a communication pathway between the brain and the body.
What is the sagittal plane?
Divides the brain into right and left portions.
What is the coronal plane?
Divides the brain into front (anterior) and back (posterior).
What is the horizontal plane?
Divides the brain into upper and lower parts.
What does medial mean?
Toward the middle of the body.
What does lateral mean?
Toward the side of the body.
What does ipsilateral mean?
On the same side of the body.
What does contralateral mean?
On the opposite side of the body.
What does anterior (rostral) mean?
Toward the front (or head) of the brain.
What does posterior (caudal) mean?
Toward the rear (or tail) of the brain.
What does superior mean?
Above or higher in position.
What does inferior mean?
Below or lower in position.
What does basal mean?
Toward the bottom.
What does proximal mean?
Near the center or point of attachment.
What does distal mean?
Farther from the center or attachment point.
