Structure and Layers Flashcards
What are the three layers of the meninges?
Dura Mater (“tough mother”): Tough outermost layer.
Arachnoid (“spiderweb-like”): Middle layer creating the subarachnoid space.
Pia Mater (“tender mother”): Thin, delicate layer tightly adhered to the brain’s surface.
What is the function of the subarachnoid space?
The subarachnoid space contains cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which suspends and cushions the brain, providing support and protection.
What are the roles of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)?
CSF cushions the brain, provides nutrients, and removes waste products.
What is meningitis and what are its effects?
Meningitis is an infection causing inflammation of the meninges, which can compress the brain and require immediate medical attention.
What happens in a hemorrhage affecting the meninges?
Bleeding distorts the meninges, squeezing the brain and potentially impairing function.
What are meningiomas?
Meningiomas are tumors arising in the meninges. While technically benign (don’t spread), they can take up space in the skull and cause harm.
Why are the meninges important for brain health?
The meninges protect the brain and spinal cord, support the brain’s suspension in CSF, and ensure proper neural function, but disruptions can lead to serious health issues.
