The Central Nervous system Flashcards
Unconscious response
a reaction to sensory stimulus that does not involve awareness. It’s unintentional, automatic and we cannot control its occurrence e.g digesting food
Conscious response
a reaction to a sensory stimulus that involves awareness. → response is usually voluntary, intentional reaction where we are ale to exercise some degree of control.
The Central Nervous System
comprises of the brain and its extension to the spinal cord. Its role is to process info receive from the internal and external environment to activate appropriate responses.
Receive info
Process info
Coordinates a response to info
CNS: The brain
an intricate network of cells that plays a vital role in processing info receive through neural pathways of the body.
factors of the brain
Receives and analyzes sensory info by controlling bodily functions
Sometimes called the control center by controlling bodily functions
Involves neural pathways comprised of one or more circuit of interconnected nerusons that forms a network.
Spinal cord
the long thin bundle of nerve fibres that extends form the base of the brain to the lower back also called verterbrate.
Roles/function of the Spinal Cord
receives sensory info: form the body and sends messages to the brain for processing e.g itch to toe
Receive motor info: form the brain and sends it to relevant organs of the body to control muscle, glans and internal organs so appropriate actions can be taken.
Responsibilties of the brain
Vital bodily actions like breathing, heart rate, digestion
Receinging info from the outside world via sense of coordinating appropriate response
High order functions → planning, thinking and learning
Emotions, personalties, sense of humur
receive, process and repsosnds–> brain
1.receives info from all our sense
- all of this info makes it way to the brain
- considers and processes this info and links it to thousands other bits of info
- decided what happens next by respsonding.
