Synaptic Plastcity Flashcards
synaptic plastcity
the ability of a synapse to change in resposne to experience
Long term potentiation LTP
the increase in synaptic strenght through high frequency stimuluation of nural pathwyas
LTP: Sprouting
the creation of new extentions on a neuron to allow it to make a new connection with other neurons
LTP: Rerouting
occurs when new connections on a neuron allows to make a new connection with other neurons
Long term depression: LTD
the long lasting and experience- dependent wakening of synaptic connections between nerons that are not regularly activated
Neuroplasticity
the brains ability to physically change in response to experience.
Type of Neuroplasticity: Developmental
occurs naturally during life span–> happens overtime
Type of Neuroplasticity: Adaptive
occurs as a result of brain damage due to trauma–> utilsing critical periods for devlopmntal plasticity helps enables greater adaptive plasticity→ repsosnds to something e.g injured barin have to learn to adapt
