The Cell Cycle and Mitosis Flashcards
What are the structures of A and B
A. Centromere
B. Chromatid
Chromatin
Substance consisting of DNA and associated proteins
Chromosome
Condensed version of chromatin
Sister chromatid
One of a pair of identical chromatids, formed during DNA replication
Centromere
Region of attachment for two sister chromatids
Gene
Segment of DNA that provides the genetic information necessary to build a protein
Genome
Entire complement of an organism’s DNA (includes all the genes in all the chromosomes)
Prophase
Chromosomes condense and nuclear envelope breaks down. Spindles fibers grow from centrioloes. Centrioloes migrate to opposite poles of cell.
Metaphase
Chromosomes lie along midline of cell. Some spindle fibers attach to kinetochres. Ribers of aster attach to plasma membrane.
Anaphase
Centromeres divide in two. Spindle fibers pull sister chromatids to opposite poles of cell. Each pole (future daughter cell ) now has an identical set of genes
Telophase
Chromosomes gather at each pole of cell. Chromatin decondeses. Nuclear envelope appears at each pole. New nucleoli appear in each nucleus. Mitotic spindle vanishes
