The cell cycle Flashcards
Similarities between Animal and Plant cells
They are both eukaryotic cells, they both contain a nucleus, mitochondria, SER and RER, Ribosomes, Cytoplasm, and Golgi apparatus.
Differences between Animal and Plant cells
Plant cells have a cell wall whereas animal cells don’t, Plant cells have a larger vacuole whereas animal cells don’t, Animal cells are more circular whereas plant cells are more square or rectangular, Animal cells have centrosomes and Lysosomes whereas plant cells don’t.
What happens during interphase?
Interphase is the starting phase of mitosis yet isn’t part of mitosis itself. Interphase has 3 main phases within the G1, S and G2 phase. During interphase the cell grows, replicates its chromosomes and prepares for cell divison.
What happens in the G1 phase?
Checks for DNA damage, if nutrients are sufficient, repairs DNA if needed, if cell size and growth is normal.
What happens in the G2 phase?
Screens through for structural damage, checks if replication has no errors, and repairs DNA if needed.
What happens in the S phase?
The S phase is responsible for the synthesis or replication of DNA, producing identical sister chromatids.
What are the stages in the mitotic phase?
Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase
What is Cytokinesis?
Cytokinesis is part of the cell division process during which the Cytoplasm of a single eukaryotic cells divides into two identical daughter cells.
Why do eukaryotic cells reproduce?
Eukaryotic cells reproduce by cell division for growth, repair and continuation of life ensuring survival of organisms.
What are the principles of cell theory?
Cells are the basic unit of life, All living cells are produced of one or more cells, All cells are created from pre-existing cells.
What happens in the G0 phase?
Cell is neither dividing or preparing to divide (Inactive or rest stage)
