Cancer Flashcards
What is cancer?
Cancer is a disease that occurs as a result of uncontrolled cell division through abnormal p53 pathways.
What is a tumour?
A tumour is an abnormal tissue mass that is the result of uncontrolled cell division
The two types of tumours
Benign - not cancerous. do not spread and invade other cells
Malignant - CANCEROUS. Able to spreads to surrounding tissue or other parts
of organism
Characteristics of cancer
Do not require growth factor signals, random arrangement of cell layers, increased division, metastasis (ancer cells are able to enter the bloodstream or lymphatic fluid and travel to a new area in the body.) , angiogenisis (cancer cells can trick the body into growing new blood vessels, which give them direct supply of oxygen and nutrients.)
