The Cell Cycle Flashcards
what two states do cells in the body alternate between
division & non-division
- division means cell is active
what is a cell cycle
sequence of events from one division to another
what are the 3 phases of somatic cells cell cycle
interphase, mitosis, cytokinesis
interphase
longest phase; period of non-division
-at the beginning they are half the size of the parent cell due to just finishing mitosis
-G1 : bulking with doubling in size and RNA and proteins synthesize
-S : duplication of DNA
-G2 : growth
when is a cell ready to divide
mitosis
checkpoints of interphase
at G1 to ensure readiness for DNA synthesis
at G2 to determine if cell is ready to enter mitosis and divide
What happens if cell is severely damaged
cell suicided (apoptosis)
necrosis
significant trauma of cell damages surrounding cells
mitosis
division of the nucleus to replace dead or wounded cells
-prophase : x shape takes form due to coiling
-metaphase : centromere attachment occurs, move to center
-anaphase : centromeres break and they begin to move towards the poles
-telophase : arrive at poles and fibers disappear
cytokinesis
division of the cytoplasm
Explain the resting G0 phase
can be temporary
- cells like hair cells & neurons that have reached an end stage will stay in G0
Why do we get cancerous cells?
B/c the cells are multiplying at a rate they shouldn’t becoming paraistes
what do you get at the end of mitosis
2 identical daughter cells
