The Cell Cycle Flashcards
1
Q
What are the three stages of the cell cycle?
A
- Interphase: Known as the resting phase and occupies most of the cell cycle.
- Nuclear Divison: When the nucleus divides int two or four.
- Division of the Cytoplasm (Cytokinesis): Follows nuclear divison and is the process by which the cytoplasm splits to form two or four new cells.
2
Q
What occurs during interphase?
A
DNA is replicated, ATP content is increased, Resting otherwise.
3
Q
How is mitosis controlled?
A
Mitosis is controlled by two types of gene.
4
Q
How do cancer and its treatment relate to the cell cycle?
A
The treatment of cancer often involves killing dividing cells by blocking a part of the cell cycle. Drugs used usually disrupt the cell cycle by:
-Preventing DNA from replicating
-Inhibiting the metaphase stage of mitosis by interfering with spindle formation
The problem with this is that they can disrupt the cell cycle of normal cells.
