Mitosis Flashcards
What is mitosis?
Mitosis is a form of cell division in which two daughter cells that have the same number of chromosomes as the parent cell and each other.
When does DNA replication take place?
Interphase.
Describe the stages of Mitosis.
=Interphase
-DNA replication
-Increase in ATP
-Cell physically grows larger
=Prophase
-Chromosomes become visible
-Centrioles move to opposite poles of cell
-Spindle fibres develop
-Spindle apparatus form
=Metaphase
-Chromosomes attach themselves to the spindle apparatus by their centromeres
=Anaphase
-Centromeres split and splindle fibres pull chromatids apart to opposite poles
=Telophase
-Chromosomes reach poles and nuclear envelope reforms around chromosomes (Forming a new nucleus)
Why is Mitosis important?
Mitosis is important for three key reasons:
-Growth
-Repair
-Reproduction
