The Cell Flashcards
What is the cell membrane and what’s its functions?
A selective barrier that regulates the flow of materials between the cells and internal/external environments
What’s the mitochondrion and what’s its functions
- the powerhouse of the cell
- produces ATP through the processing of sugars, fats and proteins
- can have 100s of not 1000s
What is the rough ER and its functions?
- Covered in ribosomes and synthesises proteins - transferred to golgi body for packaging
What is the smooth er and its functions
- Synthesises fatty acids and steroids
- stores calcium
What’s the Golgi apparatus function
Modifies, sorts and packages aswell as transports proteins from rough ER
What are the 3 types of blood cells and their special names?
Red cells - erythrocytes
White cells - leucocytes
Platelets - thrombocytes
What are the 11 systems of the body
- integumentary
- skeletal
- muscular
- nervous
- endocrine
- cardiovascular
- lymphatic
- respiratory
- digestive
- urinary
- reproductive
What are the 6 levels of structural organisation
- chemical
- cell
- tissue
- organ
- organ system
- organism
What are the 4 basic types of tissue
- epithelial
- connective
- muscular
- nervous
What is the function of the epithelial tissue and where is it fount
- Protection
- secretion
- diffusion
The whole of the body surfaces aswell as lining body cavities and hollow organs
What are the functions of the muscular tissue
They contract to produce movement and help to sustain body posture
What is the function of the nervous tissue and where is it fount
Used to coordinate and control bodily activities
Fount in the brain, spinal cord and nerves
What is the function of the connective tissue?
Supports, protects and connects other tissues and organs in the body
