The cell Flashcards
what are prokaryotes?
unicellular organisms that lack organelles or other internal membrane-bound structures
Have no nucleus’s but have a singular chromosome located in the nucleoid
what is an organelle?
sub cellular structure that has 1/more specific jobs to perform in the cell
Functions of the Nucleus (3)
- directs activities from cell -> metabolism
- chromatin network -> hereditary characteristics = DNA
- Nucleous -> protein synthesis
Functions of the Mitochodrion (1)
Cellular respiration-> breaks down glucose to release energy (ATP)
Functions of Chloroplasts/ Plastids (1)
photosynthesis has chlorophyll
Functions of Leucoplasts/ Plastids (2)
- centers of starch grain formation
* involved in the synthesis of oils and proteins
Function of Ribosomes (1)
- protein synthesis
* not membrane bound
Function of ER (2)
- transportation system -> proteins are contained within it until they are needed to move
- ER occurs in every type of eukaryotic cell expect red blood cells and sperm cells
Function of Golgi
• sorting and processing proteins
Function of Vacuole
- store water and minerals
* turgid
Function of Centrioles of Centrosomes
Assists in process of mitosis and produces spindle fiber
Function of Lysosomes
- suicide bag
* intracellular digestion
