The CCPC Flashcards
What is the CCPC
The consumer protection act 2007 is enforced through the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission. The CCPC was formed when the competition authority and the national consumer agency were amalgamated in 2014
Informs consumers about their rights
The CCPC gives consumers information about their rights in relation to the purchase of goods and services, through its website, telephone helpline, social media channels, advertising on the radio and television and it produces a newsletter through a subscription service on their website. It also runs campaigns on their website raising awareness of consumers rights. It gives information about managing money to consumers.
Enforces consumer and competition protection laws
The CCPC investigates breaches of consumer legislation and can take enforcement actions against trading companies in breach of consumer protection legislation. It can impose fines and penalties, e.g. on the spot fines for breaching price display legislation. It also publishes the consumer protection list, a list of businesses convicted of breaching consumer law.
Advises the government
The CCPC advises policy makers in relation to consumer protection and competition matters. It conducted research to identify areas where consumers need greater protection. It informs the government about the impact of any new laws or changes to existing laws may have on consumers.
Enforces product safety regulations
The CCPC monitors compliance with product safety standards and shares information across the EU about dangerous products
Assesses mergers
The CCPC examines mergers and acquisitions to ensure there is not a substantial lessening of competition in Ireland, which could impact on prices and services provided to consumers.
Evaluation
In my opinion, the CCPC has an important role to play in protecting consumers. It protects consumers because it informs consumers about their rights and can issue fines and penalties when these are breached. It enforces product safety regulations and it advises the government on consumer rights. It works to preserve competition in Ireland.
