What does development mean?
Means the ways in which a country seeks to develop economically and to improve the standard of living for its inhabitants.
What does the development gap mean?
Describes the widening differences in level of development between the world’s richest and poorest countries.
What is Rostow’s model of economic development?
Argued that a country passes from underdevelopment to development through a series of stages of economic growth.
What is the poverty cycle?
Poverty cycle explains that less developed countries are trapped in a continuing cycle of poverty because of a lack of capital and low incomes.
Politics models
Examine the impact of different philosophies on equality and development. For example Karl Marx believed that the capitalist free market economy caused exploitation and social inequality whilst communism made the effects of development more equitable.
Core periphery theories
Friedmann argued that beneficial effects can spread from developed core regions or countries to less developed, peripheral regions.
Globalisation
Countries are becoming increasings connected and interdependent at a global scale, in complex ways that are cheaper, faster and more efficient than previously.
Debt
Interest payments on loans affect development as they put pressure on the already stretched financial situation of a country. Loans have to be repaid + interest.
