The Cardiovascular System (Overview) Flashcards
What is Hemodynamics?
The flow of the blood throughout the body
The amount of Calcium in the body + Amount of Myosin Filaments in the heart both effect what?
The Heart’s Contractility
What things make up your Renin-Angiotensin Aldosterone System (RAAS)?
Several organs that regulate BP (Liver, Kidneys, Lungs, Adrenal Glands)
When is the RAAS activated?
When the kidneys detect a decreased blood flow to themselves.
When the kidneys detect a Low Serum Sodium Level in the blood.
When the Kidneys detect a decrease in sodium or blood flow, what enzyme do they release?
Renin
What occurs after the kidneys release Renin?
The Renin starts a complex set of events that lead to the release of Angiotensin II into the circulation
What does Angiotensin II do?
It’s a powerful Vasoconstrictor that stimulates the Kidneys to decrease Sodium + Water excretion
Stimulates the release of Aldosterone
What releases Aldosterone?
The Adrenal Gland
What does Aldosterone do?
Increases Sodium Reabsorption from the Renal Tubes
Where does fat develop in the Arteries during Atherosclerosis?
In the walls of the Arteries (The Intima)
