The Cardiovascular System Flashcards
what system distributes gases and other materials around the body?
the cardiovascular system
what are the three main components of the cardiovascular system?
circulating blood, pumping the heart, and vascular system
what is plasma made of?
water and dissolved salts, gases and proteins
what are the two types of blood?
Plasma(liquid) and Cellular(solid)
what are examples of cellular blood?
red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets
where can blood stem cells be found?
in bone marrow
produces cellular components of blood
blood stem cells
blood that carried oxygen from lunges to body in which is packed with hemoglobin molecules
Red Blood Cells
functions in the Immune system, attack invading organisms, and removes toxins, waste, and damaged cells
White Blood Cells
membrane-bound fragments of larger cells that works to prevent blood loss
Platelets
stops the flow of blood out of damaged blood vessels
blood clotting
what happens after an injury?
the muscles in the damaged blood vessel contract which restricts the blood flow, the platelets attach to the vessel breaches and form a plug to help restrict the blood flow, and then the damaged tissue releases chemical signals that begin the blood clotting process
what protein makes up a blood clot?
Fibrin
consist of a net made of Fibrin which forms a patch over the damaged area
blood clot
what happens when you get a blood clot?
Cell devision occurs around the tissue and damaged vessel, the cut is sealed and the patch dissolves when healed
fist sized organ that consists of two coordinated muscular pumps
the heart
in the heart, what does the pump on the right side do?
receives oxygen-poop blood from the body and sends it to the lungs
in the heart, what does the pump on the left side do?
recovers oxygen-rich blood from the lungs and circulates it within the body
what are the two chambers int he heart?
the Atrium(thin) and the ventricle(thick)
small patch of muscle tissue in the right atrium wall that determines intrinsic heart rhythm by sending out electrical signals and controlling the heart rate
Sinoatrial (SA) node
what is the cardiac cycle?
a complete sequence of the heart filling with blood and then pumping
what are the two phases of the cardiac cycle?
the Systole(contraction) phase and the Diastole(relaxed)phase
