Q

What are the main functions of the Cardiovascular System?

A

1) Delivers oxygen and nutrients to the body.

2) Protects against Infection and Diseases.

3) Removes waste products such as Carbon Dioxide

4) Keeps our bodies at a constant temperature.

5) Pumps blood around the body.

Q

How does Cardiovascular Disease affect a Physiological measurement?

A

Blood Pressure - It can damage your blood vessels, reducing the blood flow around your body and back to your heart. Your heart then has to work harder to pump blood and can become enlarged or weak and can’t work as well as it should and therefore it would affect your Blood Pressure readings.

Q

What is the function of capillaries?

A

1) Oxygen and nutrients from the blood can move through the walls and get into organs and tissues.

2) The capillaries also take waste products away from your tissues. Capillaries are where oxygen and nutrients are exchanged for carbon dioxide and waste.

Q

What is the function of Arteries?

A

1) Always carry blood away from the heart

2) Carry blood under high pressure

3) Carry oxygenated blood, except for the pulmonary artery

Q

What is the function of Veins?

A

1) Always carry blood to the heart

2) Always carry deoxygenated blood, except for the pulmonary vein

3) Carry blood under low or negative pressure

Q

What is the function of the Systemic circuit?

A

The Systemic circuit, blood with oxygen, nutrients and hormones travels from the heart to the rest of the body. In the veins, the blood picks up waste products as the body uses up the oxygen, nutrients and hormones.

Q

What is the function of the Pulmonary circuit?

A

The Pulmonary circuit carries blood without oxygen from the heart to the lungs. The pulmonary veins return oxygenated blood to the heart.

Q

What is the function of Plasma?

A

1) Redistributing water where your body needs it.

2) Delivering hormones, nutrients and proteins to parts of your body and helping to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide.

3) Supporting blood vessels from collapsing or clogging.

4) Maintaining blood pressure and circulation.

Q

What is the function of Platelets?

A

Your platelets function to stop bleeding. During an injury, your platelets will cluster together at the site of the wound to act as a plug, sealing blood vessels in a process called clotting to prevent excess blood from leaving your body.

A

To fight infection by pathogens and stop disease

16
Q

A Blood Pressure Machine can also be called a what?

A

Sphygmomanometer

17
Q

What are the (2) two types of different Blood Pressure readings we obtain?

A

Systolic and Diastolic
