What is an empire?
A collection of areas of land or even countries that are ruled over and by one leading or ‘mother’ country.
What is a ‘mother’ country?
A leading country.
What is a colony?
A place controlled by the ‘mother’ country.
Give 3 reasons why Britain wanted an empire?
- Religion
- Economics
- Exploration
How did Britain get their empire?
War - If Britain won a war against a country, they would have taken over the land.
Settlers - British people would go to parts of the east coast of America and make their settling place part of the British empire.
Discovery - Originally, explorers would find land and claim it for the British empire.
Trade - When British companies went to trade in some places, and slowly took over large parts of land.
what was a puritan
a member of a group of English Protestants of the late 16th and 17th centuries who regarded the Reformation of the Church under Elizabeth I as incomplete and sought to simplify and regulate forms of worship.
where did the Puritans/ Separatists go?
To North America (USA)
How was life in the new world like?
In the first winter most of the people died, then in the spring a tribe agreed to share their resources, in exchange for the Pilgrims to protect the tribe from their enemies. They sailed on the Mayflower, from Plymouth.
what are pirates?
Pirates are people that rob boats via sea.
What is a Privateer?
an armed ship owned and crewed by private individuals holding a government commission and authorized for use in war, especially in the capture of merchant shipping
What was the Indian Mutiny?
It was Rebellien against the British
What was the punishment for the Rebels?
The punishment for the Rebels were getting sewn into Digo skins, before they were hanged, whilst other were forced to lick the blood of the floor. They were also blown from the barrel of a cannon.
Why would the English give them these harsh punishments.
These punishments were brutal so the others would learn a lesson not to disobey the English or they would end up like the others.
