A group of countries around the world that are ruled by another countries.
Colonies?
Land and settlements established in countries that belong to another country
The New World?
The land in the Americas which were discovered by the Europeans in the 15th and 16th century. The old world refers to Africa, Europe and Asia.
Puritan?
An extremely strong protestant
Pilgrim fathers?
The puritans who settled in America in 1620 were given his name
Trade?
The exchange of goods
Imperialism?
The process of extending a country’s power and influence through building an empire
Patriotism?
Devotion and support of ones country
Protectorate?
An area partly governed by Britain but which still had some control over its own affairs
Independence?
When a country governs itself
Why do Americans speak English?
England colonised America and brought along their language.
Why did Britain want control over India?
- to sell India’s natural resources and make profit of them
- to gain power and reputation from other countries
- to help improving countries
- to spread Christianity
What happened to the Sepoy Mutiny?
A group of Indian soldiers called Sepoys shot dead several British soldiers which led to battle between the British and Sepoys.
How did Gandhi help to achieve Indian independence?
- he started a non violent protest
- he let the British physically hurt him but didn’t strike back
- He started a campaign on civil disobedience
He converted England back to non violence
