The Breakdown Of Cooperarion Flashcards

Q

How did did international co operation change from 1920-1933 para 1

A

One way that international coperarion changed is that it weakened due to the failure of the League of Nations

  • for example: the leagues failure at the 1923 Corfu incident, when one of the leading powers, Italy, broke the covenant, by invading a Greek island named Corfu. Greece appealed to the LON but since Italy were one of the countries in the league, they did nothing. Demonstrated that the LON could be undermined by its own memebers.
  • the Locarno pact of 1925 seemed to imply to others that the treaty of Versailles was of little importance and many countries had began to question its significance, if the major powers made agreements outside the league.
  • in 1931, when Japan invaded Manchuria, the league ordered the withdrawal of Japanese troops, this however, was ignored and the league did not impose economic sanctions on the league.

Q

How did did international co operation change from 1920-1933 para 2

A

Another way that international cooperation changed was that relationships between countries became damaged

  • For example: in 1923, when French and Belgium troops occupied the key German industrial area of the Ruhr and sent in 60,000 soldiers, demanding their unpaid reparations. There were violent actions- flooding coal mines and setting factories on fire. This caused France and Germany’s relationship to worsen even further.
  • Britain and France drew up the Geneva Protocol in 1924, which they hoped would strengthen the league, however the new conservative government of Britain refused to sign the protocol, worried that Britain would be forced to agree to something that was not in its own interests. This caused tension between the countries.
  • Germany were upset about how they had been treated after the war, and walked out of the Disarmament conference of 1932-34 , as they stated it was unfair that they had been forced to disarm after ww1 while other nations had not done the same. Their walking out caused their relationship and cooperation to worsen
