Appeasement
One reason why they stopped following a policy of appeasement
Hitler was proved to be untrustworthy as he kept breaking promises
- he broke the Munich agreement and invaded czechoslovakia in 1939
- he signed a pact with the Nazi- soviet pact with the Soviet Union on 23 Aug
- he invaded Poland on Sept 1939
Another reason why they stopped following a policy of appeasement
Britain and France were more willing to go to war
- Appeasement bought Britain and France valuable time to rearm and make preparations for war (after Munich they rearmed rapidly)
- they also felt a lot more confident since they knew they had the public behind them, as they hated Hitler after seeing what he was capable of
- though they resented the idea of a repeat of WW1, they knew it was what had to be done as they couldn’t let Hitler get away with what he wanted anymore

The combination of the fact that Hitler was being highly untrustworthy and that Britain and France were more willing to go to war, meant that they felt it neccesdary to drop the policy of appeasement in order to prevent Hitler from doing whatever he wanted
Key features of the events of Anschluss
1936-7 Hitler encouraged the Austrian Nazi Party to stir up trouble for the government. They staged demonstrations demanding union with Germany. He later ordered them to bomb public buildings and stage mass parades. In 1938 Hitler invited the Austrain Chancellor to Germany to discuss the chaos and Schusching decided to hold a plebiscite to allow the Austrians to vote on the future of their country. Hurler was worried they would vote against him, so he threatened invasion and forced schusching to resign. 13 March 1938 Anschluss is proclaimed. 99.75% of Austrians voted in favor of it.
