The brain & sensory systems Flashcards
What is perception?
An active process creating a subjective experience of the environment. Constructed based on sensory input and interpretation.
Name 5 human receptors
- Ears
- Eyes
- Nose
- Skin
- Mouth
What is the Sagittal and Coronal plane divided into?
Saggittal - dorsal/ventral plane + inferior/superior plane
Coronal - right/left plane + inferior/superior plane
What are the 2 units of the peripheral nervous system?
Autonomic (internal) can be sympathetic and parasympathetic
Somatic (external) 12 pairs of cranial nerves and 31 pairs of spinal nerves
How is the central nervous system formed?
Begins as a neutral tube with a fluid filled internal capacity, then expands to form three primary brain vesicles: forebrain, midbrain, hindbrain
What are the functions of the cerebrum?
Conscious thought processing, memory, conscious/subconscious skeletal muscle contractions
What is the function of the thalamus?
Relay and process sensory information
What is the function of the hypothalaus?
emotions, autonomic functions and hormone production
What is the function of the cerebellum?
Complex somatic motor patterns
What is the function of the pons?
relay sensory information to the cerebellum and the thalamus, subconscious motor centres
What is the function of the mid brain?
Processes visual and auditory data
Reflexive motor responses
Maintains consciousness
What is the function of the Medulla Oblongata?
Relays information to the thalamus, maintains cardiovascular, respiratory and digestive activities
Name the 4 lobes of the cerebral cortex
- Frontal lobe
- Parietal lobe
- Occipatal lobe
- Temporal lobe
What are the divisions between lobes called? Name 3
Sulcus
- Central sulcus (between frontal and parietal)
- Parieto-occipatal sulcus
- Sylvian fissure/lateral sulcus
What can the cortex be further divided into?
52 broadmann areas
