Action and Perception Flashcards
What is GIbson’s theory of direct perception?
That visual information controls actions directly and that the visual properties of objects ‘affords’ actions
What brain regions are involved in perception and action?
- Occipatal lobe for visual inputs
- Parietal lobe for direct control of actions
- Temporal lobe for recognition and memory
What effect does ventral pathway damage have on perception and action?
- Cannot correctly recognise objects and orientation
- Can guide actions visually
ifWhat is the ventral pathway and the dorsal pathway?
Ventral pathway (perception) - V1 to temporal lobe Dorsal pathway (action) - V1 to parietal lobe (Goodale and Milner)
Does visual control suffer illusions?
No
What are Rizzolatti and Gallese’s mirror neurone systems?
- Cells fire during the performance of motor actions
- Cells fire when others are seen/heard performing the same actions
What are mirror neurone systems most responsive to?
- actions within our motor repertoire
- analyse other’s actions in terms of how we would perform them
What is TMS?
Transcranial magnetic stimulation, if in the motor cortex can induce action potentials in the muscles
How are the thresholds for TMS affected by the perception of actions?
Reduced threshold for action potentials for the muscles being used in the same action
What response do goats and rats have to visual cliff illusions?
- Goats fearful of deep side from day 1
- Rats fearless?
From what age to infants have an increased interest in facial patterns?
From 2 mins old
What is Blakemore’s theory of orientation sensitive cells?
- Innate at birth
- Visual environment influences their distribution
Do chicks become adapted to prisms over time?
Not really, consistency in aim increases but ability to hit the target does not
