The Brain in General- Week One Flashcards
What divides the 2 hemispheres?
Inter hemipheric fissure
What divides the frontal lobe and parietal lobe?
Central sulcus
The Sylvian fissure divides which 2 lobes?
Frontal and temporal lobes
Human vs animal brains:
Humans have larger brains More complex shape Convolutions: increased S.A Gyri and Sulci bigger brain to body weight ratio Extreme No of neurons
The 4 Lobes (Briefly)
Frontal Lobe: memory, planning and movement
Parietal Lobe: somatosensory cortex, attention
Temporal Lobe: contains auditory cortex, involved in speech perception
Occipital Lobe: visual cortex, vision
Locations of the Cortexes:
Motor Cortex: in the frontal lobe just to the left of the central sulcus
Somatosensory Cortex: parietal lobe just to the right of the central sulcus
Visual Cortex: in the occipital lobe
Auditory Cortex: temporal lobe
Olfactory Cortex: frontal lobe
Role of the Cerebellum:
allows multitasking, execution of motor skills and some cognition
Role of the Brainstem:
Networks of connections from the spinal cord
The role of ‘pons’:
sleep/arousal, breathing. motor control and posture
The role of ‘medulla’:
controls reflexive actions; vomiting, balance, respiration and heart rate
What are the roles of cranial nerves?
Control unconcious actions: e.g heart rate and gut activity
V.important in relation to emotional reactions e.g stress
