The Brain Flashcards
What does the nervous system allow an animal to do ?
To respond more rapidly to changing environmental conditions and maintain homeostasis
What does the brain allow us to do ?
To understand that we understand
What are the two parts that the human nervous system is divided into ?
Its divided into two parts - the retina, brain and spinal cord forming the CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM
The nerves supplying the skeletal muscles and organs forming the PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM
What can the peripheral nervous system be furtherly divided into ?
into the somatic and autonomic nervous systems
What are the anatomical schemes dividing the central nervous system ?
The cereal hemisphere,
the structures in the core beneath the hemispheres,
The brainstem and the cerebellum
and
the spinal cord
What is the brain confined and protected by ?
The cranial cavity
What lines the cranial cavity ?
Dura mater
What is the principle division of the brain ?
Into the two hemisphere
How many lobes are there to each hemisphere ?
There are 4,
1. Frontal
2. Temporal
3. Parietal
4. Occipital
What is function of frontal lobe
Is associated with higher mental functions such as planning and language. It is also the site of the primary motor cortex
What is the function of the parietal lobe ?
Is the site for incoming sensation from the body
What is the function of the temporal lobe ?
Processes sound, is one of the sites for language and is involved with memory and Vision
What is the occipital lobe the principal area for ?
Vision
What is the cingulate gyrus associated with ?
Processing emotion
What is the function of basal ganglia, thalamus and hypothalamus ?
- BASAL GANGLIA - are part of the system controlling movement
- THALAMUS - is the principal site for the initial processing of sensory information
- HYPOTHALAMUS - Is important for homeostasis and endocrine regulation
