The Brain Flashcards
Semester 1 revision
Frontal Lobe
The largest brain structure. Attention and decision making, planning and thinking, short term memory, motivation
Parietal Lobe
Interprets surroundings
controls sensory functions
Responsible for coordination and perception
Temporal Lobe
Understands emotion and language
Store memories
Responsible for recognition and processing of sensory input
Occipital Lobe
Processes information from the eyes and controls vision
Differentiates between shapes and colours
Cerebellum
Control motor skill:
Movement, coordination, balance, reflex memory and posture
Brain Stem
Maintains homeostasis, controls breathing and heart rate, helps make facial expressions
responsible for alertness, sleep and startle responses.
Midbrain
Regulates sleep, arousal, temperature and motor control
Pons
Passes neural information between brain regions
Medulla
Controls digestion, breathing, heart rate and swallowing
Thalamus
Receives and Relays on sensory information like visual and auditory input
Conveys balance and pain data
Hypothalamus
Body temp, water balance, hunger, sex drives
Activates sympathetic, nervous and endocrine systems
Hippocampus
Responsible for learning and memory formation
Amygdala
Recognising facial expressions like fear and forming emotional memories
Is there a difference between the Left and Right hemisphere?
Yes
Features of the Left Hemisphere of the Brain
Logical, Detail-oriented, Safe, Comprehensive, Realistic
