Having fun, being with friends, experiencing competition, achieving success, fitness, improving skills.
Why do adults participate in sports?
Health reasons, weight loss/fitness, competition, self challenge, feeling better, socialising
What is the general trend in women over the age of 15 participating in sports?
Downward trend, the amount rapidly declines after 15
What is the trend in participation in organised vs non-organised sports as age increases?
More participation in non-organised sport
What is the trend with participation in sports in socioeconomic groups?
Generally less privileged people participate less in Sport.
What are reasons that people may not participate in Sport?
Lack of opportunities, socio-economic disadvantages, cost, lack of time, remote lifestyle, illnesses or injury, other responsibilities.
What are the physical benefits of participation in Sport?
Cardio and muscular fitness, increases metabolism, maintain/lose weight, increases bone density, sleep quality, brain function
What are the mental/emotional benefits of participation in Sport?
Reduced stress, decreases chances of anxiety and depression, improves mood, confidence, concentration, cognitive function and increases happiness.
What are the social benefits of participating in Sport?
Positive self image, meeting new people, improves tolerance, cooperation, leadership skills, communication and teamwork.
What are some reason that people drop out of sport?
Time/cost, Lack of enjoyment, coach/peers, poor self image
How can participation in Sport be improved?
Non-competitive leagues, becoming involved coaching or admin, trying a variety of sport, having good role models
